Controlling High Blood Pressure
I just went to my doctor for my follow up check up. I don’t know if it was just what they call a “white coat hypertension” wherein the blood pressure is elevated only in the clinical setting, because of anxiety or maybe because I was worrying a lot and over-analyzing things. Surprisingly, my blood pressure indeed has gone up…not to high though, it was just borderline, but still, there was a dramatic increase from the lower limit of the normal to a borderline high. It is just exactly what I am worrying about.
My doctor said however, that it isn’t enough for me to be classified as hypertensive. There has to be some more series of blood pressure readings to show that it really is consistently high.
Whatever the case is, this just means that prevention should start now. Aside from lifestyle, my doctor also advised me to also make some modifications in my diet. I should lessen my total fat intake with much emphasis on my cholesterol intake. I also love to highly season my food with sodium rich foods. I’m also a self confessed coffee and soda addict. These are two things that I feel I cannot live without but I know is bad for both the heart and sleep health. Although I already stopped smoking long time ago, I still drink every once in awhile, but now, I should internalize that those two things are also bad for me.
According to my doctor, diet should really be accompanied by regular exercise. This should be at least 30 minutes per day and preferably in the morning so as not to destroy my nighttime sleep.
Actually these pieces of advice are actually a recording. I have heard this many times from doctors. A lot of advocacy programs also have these as their favorite topics. This is because it holds true for everyone –regardless of whether you have insomnia or hypertension, or whether you are actually healthy or ill. Proper diet and healthy lifestyle is really a prerequisite to a healthy living. It is easier said than done, but it is doable. I guess what is critical is just your decision that you will do it and the faith that you can do it.
