Caffeine-addict Symptomatology
Caffeinemania – a term that I use to describe a lifestyle fueled up by caffeine. Members of the group are composed of generalists called caffeinemanics and the specialists called coffeeholics and soda addicts.
All I know is that I’ve been a coffee lover for so long a time now. It is actually just now that I realized that caffeine in its many forms (coffee, tea, softdrinks, cocoa products, etc.) has been taking over the lives of many people in all settings. It does not only function as a stimulant but it is also seen as a “social lubricant.” For us, yuppies, “coffee break” has been a culture in offices. Pharmacology even described caffeine as “the most widely used psychoactive drug in the world.”
As for my case, eversince I was a student, I’ve been partnering with caffeine with all the school related activities that I have been doing. Now, my activities just changed a little but caffeine is still something that I cannot live without. It is already a part of my system that even if I had enough sleep, I still feel the need to take it in the morning and during my afternoon snack. Sometimes I feel that it is just psychological dependence but whatever the case is, it most likely a form of dependence.
Little did I know that my being coffee-lover indeed puts me at risk in crossing the line that separates “ok” to “too much.”
There area actually conditions that result from excessive caffeine intake: caffeine dependence, intoxication caffeine-induced sleep disorder, and caffeine-induced anxiety disorder. Getting out of the trap is not also easy as there is what we call caffeine withdrawal wherein a person experience undesirable symptoms upon abruptly stopping coffee drinking.
I’ve actually seen caffeine as my ever so reliable bestfriend since it keeps me awake and alert whenever I need to, until it reached a point when I can no longer rely on it. At the moment, that it doesn’t exert an influence on me already. People including my doctor told me to stop it because I had problems with my sleep, but the thing is, even before I experienced sleep problems, I can drink caffeine right before hitting the bed. It can play the functions of a hot milk that is said to be effective in calming the system.
Up to this point, I dunno what it is in caffeine that made me helplessly fall in love with it. It took me under its spell that I still can’t get out of it until now.
